Some artists are known for their experimentation in cycles or series of paintings when one, two or even three works are not enough to express the whole visual conception. This is how Azerbaijani artist Vugar Muradov has recently preferred to work, in consistent development of his original artistic ideas.
And now he has dared to apply this method to that most prized of Azerbaijani visual traditions — the carpet! We remind you that the Azerbaijani art of carpet making, while certainly ancient and fundamental to the ethos, is also an exceedingly conservative tradition, somewhat averse to modification of rules established over the centuries. Innovation is suspect and subject to disregard. However, I perceive that Muradov has resolved this delicate matter in a most suitable way — in adopting a sculptural approach to the image.
